CADCA will host a special screening of the 90-minute centerpiece film of the new HBO documentary series entitled "ADDICTION" during its National Leadership Forum XVII at the Washington, D.C. Convention Center on Feb. 14, 2007 at 7:30 p.m.

The series is part of a multi-platform media campaign that HBO and its partners - the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) - have planned to educate Americans about addiction.

Following the screening, a panel comprised of experts in the research and treatment of addiction and leading constituency groups will discuss the new film.

The groundbreaking documentary depicts the struggles of people with addiction and their family members, and offers important scientific information about the chronic, relapsing nature of addiction. Topics in the film will include exciting new medical advancements, the science of addiction, insurance discrimination and the difficulty in finding adequate treatment.

HBO's ADDICTION is supported by an unprecedented 30-city nationwide community outreach campaign funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and coordinated by CADCA, Join Together and Faces & Voices of Recovery.

Known as "ADDICTION: Communities Take Action," the project will engage the American public to watch the centerpiece and associated films, and take action in their communities to support treatment and long-term recovery efforts. Activities will include house parties, town hall meetings and other special events in hundreds of locations throughout the country. To get involved, visit www.AddictionAction.org.

Panelists at CADCA's ADDICTION Premiere will include:

  • General Arthur T. Dean, Chairman and CEO, CADCA
  • John Hoffman, Vice President, Documentary Programming, HBO
  • Dr. Tim Condon, Deputy Director, National Institute on Drug Abuse
  • Dr. Mark Willenbring, Director of the Treatment and Recovery Research Division, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
  • Dr. Victor A. Capoccia, Senior Program Officer, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
  • Dr. David Rosenbloom, Associate Professor of Public Health, the Boston University School of Public Health and Director, Join Together
  • Pat Taylor, Executive Director, Faces & Voices of Recovery

CADCA's National Leadership Forum XVII is the nation's largest conference for community coalition advocates and substance abuse professionals. The event will be held on February 12-15, 2007 at the Washington, D.C. Convention Center and will feature more than 100 workshops on some of today's most pressing prevention and treatment issues.
